Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

Trying to be all things to all people can really backfire online – here’s how to avoid falling into that trap and how to fix it the easy way.

There’s one mistake I see more than any other when it comes to business websites, and it (nearly!) always comes from a good place.

You’ve worked hard to build what you have. You offer multiple products or services, perhaps across different sectors, and you’re rightly proud of the results you deliver. So when it comes to your website, the instinct is to show it ALL off.

Everything you do. For everyone you could help. All at once.

And that’s exactly where things start to go wrong.

Because, what feels like showcasing your full capability to you… feels like chaos to your website visitor.

They land on your homepage and are immediately faced with a long list of options, services, pathways, buttons, menus – all competing for attention. Instead of thinking “this is exactly what I need”, they’re thinking “where do I even start?”

And when people feel unsure, they don’t dig deeper. They leave.

It’s not about showing everything – it’s about showing the right thing first.

One of the most common things I hear when I raise this is: “But if we focus on just one thing, people will think that’s all we do” – and I get that, really I do. But here’s the reality…

Your website isn’t a brochure. It’s not a “shop window”. Nor is it there to list everything you’ve ever done. It’s there to guide someone. To speak directly to their specific challenge, and demonstrate that you’re exactly what they need right now. That’s all.

Think about walking into a shop where every single product is piled up at the entrance. No aisles, no signage, no clear direction. Just everything in a heap right by the front door. You wouldn’t stay long, and you certainly wouldn’t buy much.

Your website works in exactly the same way.

When you lead with the thing you most want to be known for – the product you most want to sell, the service you most enjoy delivering, the clients you get the best results for – something really powerful happens.

People recognise themselves. They feel understood, reassured – and they know they’re in the right place.

And from there, you can guide them to everything else you offer in a way that makes sense.

And here’s the bit most people miss…

It’s not just your visitors who get confused when you try to do everything at once – Search Engines do too!

If your website is talking about five, ten, fifteen different services on a page, with equal weight or importance on every one of them, there’s no clear signal as to what you’re actually known for. Which means when someone searches for the exact thing you’re brilliant at, you’re far less likely to show up. (Pause for screams of horror…)

I go into this in more detail in my best-selling book Website Mastery for Business Owners Who Don’t Speak Tech This ties directly into Stage 1: Strategy – particularly Why your website needs a roadmap: where clarity, flow and guiding the user journey are key to results.

So how do you fix it?

Well the good news; you don’t need to tear your whole website apart. You just need to get crystal clear on your starting point.

Here are two simple ways to do that:

  • Your “repeat client” test Think about the clients you love working with – the ones you’d happily clone if you could. What did they come to you for? What was the core problem you solved? That’s your lead message. If that’s not obvious on your homepage, that’s where to start.
  • The “one thing” challenge If you could only promote one service for the next six months, which would it be? Not because it’s the only thing you do, but because it’s the most valuable, the most enjoyable, or the most scalable. That’s your anchor. Everything else supports it.

When you simplify your message, you don’t limit your business. You strengthen it.

You make it easier for the right people to find you, easier for them to understand you, and far more likely that they’ll take that next step.

Because in a world where everyone is shouting everything at once, the businesses that win are the ones who make things feel clear.

And clarity is what converts.
